After 37 years, Hack & Wack Barber Shop will close at the end of the year

Banks – After 37 years of cutting hair in Banks, Barbara Hartmann, 76, will hang up her scissors on December 31 and close up the Hack & Wack Barber Shop in the corner space at 13791 NW Main Street.

“I’m retiring.” she says.

An old Forest Grove News-Times clipping, when Hack & Wack Barber Shop was featured as the “Banks Area Merchant of the Month.”

After working in the same place on Main Street for almost four decades, Hartmann says Banks hasn’t changed that much – there’s more houses, she says, and she misses the days when Jim’s Thriftway was across the street from her shop.

The Arkansas native hasn’t lost her accent and she’s quick to say how much she appreciates the people she’s cut hair for.

“What I really want to do is thank my customers. I like everybody that came in.” says Hartmann, who’s lived in Banks since 1978. “I’m gonna miss the people, and cutting hair.”
