Early morning crash leaves 11 elk dead on Sunset Highway

Mountaindale – An early morning crash between a pickup truck and a herd of elk left 11 elk dead and eastbound Sunset Highway near Dersham Road closed this morning, according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a media release from the Sheriff’s Office, James Childers III, 36, was traveling eastbound on Highway 26 around 4:25 a.m. in a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche when he crashed into a herd of elk that were crossing the highway. Childers suffered no injuries in the crash and fully cooperated with the investigation.

Eastbound lanes were closed while Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife troopers responded to salvage and process the elk to be donated to local food banks and senior centers.
