Columbia County- A fatal crash south of Vernonia at the Timber Road and Highway 47 junction closed Highway 47 for about two hours on the morning of Friday, March 9.
According to Oregon State Police, emergency crews responded to a head-on crash involving two vehicles south of Vernonia around 7:50 a.m. on Friday.
Oregon State Police Troopers who investigated the scene say that a Nissan passenger car was traveling north on Highway 47 when it crossed the double yellow lines and crashed head-on into a 1996 Ford F350.
It is unknown why the Nissan crossed into opposing traffic.
The sole occupant and driver of the Nissan was pronounced deceased on scene. The operator of the Ford truck, a resident of Vernonia, was not injured and was the only individual in the truck.
Investigators are still trying to locate the family of the deceased operator of the Nissan.
Emergency crews from Vernonia Fire as well as OSP Troopers, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oregon Department of Transportation all responded to the crash, which remains under investigation.
